Growing your DevOps Mindset

Practicing DevOps successfully requires knowledge of hard skill areas such as continuous delivery and automated testing. But even if you have all these tools in place, you are not necessarily successful. And why is that? In most cases, the people are not in the right "state" or mindset, to actually use these new practices and tools. Fear of failure, of speaking up, motivation and drive are all factors that play an important role. Creating a culture where people show courage, work on team building, practice DevOps leadership and have a continuous improvement mindset is hard but extremely important. In this session, I will talk about what a DevOps MindSet is. How to recognize fears and counter-productive behavior and give you some tips and insights on how to start growing a DevOps Mindset for yourself and your colleagues.

Contemplating reliability, why less can be more.

Intuitively, we want to create good applications whose reliability is pushed to the maximum. What we tend to overlook is the hidden drawbacks of aiming for an overly high reliability, like mental stress during an outage and hesitance towards rapid feature development. Accepting that failures may occur takes off stress from DevOps teams and allows them to focus on what really matters for the end-users. In this talk, we’ll discuss an outline for a framework on how much failure DevOps teams should reasonably expect using error budgets. While technical errors may abound, user impact may be negligible, so keeping an eye on end-user impact is of the essence. This will show us how severe an incident really is and help us stay sane during “unimportant” incidents. Moreover, when reliability is surpassing expectations, we will learn that we can allow for more “risky business” and innovate fastly, improving on customer experience in another way.

MLOps implemented - how we combine the cloud and open-source to boost data scientists work

In this talk we share our experiences of the MLOps platform we build for our customers and how they boost the way data scientists work. We show how their projects of ML models training can go from zero to production in much shorter time, while achieving superior performance, high code quality, training repeatability and governance. Also interesting from the deployment perspective, the platform mixes best-of-breed cloud managed services with a small number of powerful open-source components (e.g. Kedro, MLflow, Seldon) to get extra functionality that data scientists and their ML models need. It should be interesting to anyone from data scientists to platform builders or architects.

Running 30 year old code in the cloud

Docker makes it easy to containerize existing applications and run them on arbitrary machines. Kubernetes takes it to the next level by offering fast and easy container orchestration at runtime. Containerization has been common practice in the Linux world for years, but lately, developers on the Microsoft stack have jumped on the Docker bandwagon too. That is all nice and dandy for .NET Core applications that are easily deployable in Docker on Linux, but what if you have a 30-year-old maritime simulator that has to be cloudified and run as a Software as a Service offering on-demand? In this presentation, we’ll share the journey of our team that led us from hope to desperation to glory in turning on-premise simulators into a full-blown cloud-native service, with some ancient pieces still in there. It surely can be done!

Cloud Security – It ain’t rocketscience, a variety perspective.

Is a secure cloud possible or an neverending rat-race? We know the debate around “The Cloud Is Just Someone Else's Computer.” The cloud is an technology ecosystem that provided us so much more options than time-share mainframe, multi-user unix systems or patterns as CORBA and RPC could provide us. I'll introduce you into the concept of Variety known from Requise Variety. One of the key attributes of an antifragile IT systems. Workshop Delta Lake Sharing – Databricks – Nov 4

In May of this year, Databricks released Delta Sharing, an open protocol for the secure exchange of massive datasets. Through the generation of pre-signed, short-lived URLs pointing directly at requested data, and their distribution to authenticated data consumers, Delta Sharing facilitates real-time, platform-agnostic access to an organization’s information. This makes Delta Sharing well-suited as a means to inter-domain dataset distribution in the Data Mesh. Data Mesh is an architectural paradigm that erupted into the public consciousness at around the same time. This code breakfast consists of two parts.

Best practices for optimizing cost and performance of your Microsoft Workloads on AWS

Why is it important to optimize costs? TCO has two main components: infrastructure cost and software licenses cost. The usual optimization scenario is when a customer wants to find compute, storage and licensing configuration that reaches the desired performance level at minimum cost. When you run SQL Server workloads, licensing makes up the majority of the TCO, so this is where you want to optimize. In this session we are going to cover basics of Microsoft licensing on AWS and best practices for compute and licensing optimization of SQL Server workloads on AWS. And finally we will discuss how AWS Optimization and Licensing Assessment (AWS OLA) can help you to see potential cost savings when migrating your Windows Workloads to AWS.

Scaling your business into China

Name the first three cloud providers you can think of! Chances are you came up with one or more cloud providers from the US (AWS, Google, Azure to name a few). And can you name four Chinese cloud providers? If you can, you are already well ahead of the competition, as most companies don’t often look to China for anything cloud-related. And even though Chinese cloud providers are still considered niche players in many areas, if you are looking to scale your business in China, working with a local provider can really make a difference. Before you get to releasing software though, there are many other things to consider and tackle.
